			</a>
		</div>
<p>I came home the other day to find a box on my doorstep, and here&#8217;s what I found inside:</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://dcbydesignblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/sunroom4.png"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-852" title="sunroom4" src="http://dcbydesignblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/sunroom4.png" alt="" width="461" height="346" /></a></p>
<p>I&#8217;m not normally a candle person, but for <a href="http://www.jomalone.com" target="_blank">Jo Malone</a>? I would certainly make an exception! I had known this was coming, as the PR lady from <a href="http://www.farrow-ball.com/default.aspx?language=en-GB" target="_blank">Farrow &amp; Ball</a> had told me about a partnership between these two British companies, but I was kind of unsure how paint and candles could work. Then I opened the box:</p>
<p><a href="http://dcbydesignblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/sunroom2.png"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-853" title="sunroom2" src="http://dcbydesignblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/sunroom2.png" alt="" width="576" height="432" /></a></p>
<p>They sent me their &#8220;Contemporary Classic&#8221; candle, which is paired with a sample pot of Farrow&#8217;s Breakfast Room Green. And how interesting that it just happens to go wonderfully with the bowl in my breakfast room (and my beloved black beeswax candles):</p>
<p><a href="http://dcbydesignblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/sunroom1.png"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-854" title="sunroom1" src="http://dcbydesignblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/sunroom1.png" alt="" width="432" height="576" /></a></p>
<p>The candles, which come in five colors, are &#8220;designed to create a scented ambiance and enhance any decor.&#8221; It&#8217;s a great marketing scheme, because of course now that I&#8217;m armed with my sample pot, I&#8217;m going love it so much that I&#8217;ll run out and buy more paint to go with my new candle!</p>
<p>Well, maybe not, but I assume that&#8217;s the goal. I do like the candle in my breakfast room &#8212; here&#8217;s a wider shot:</p>
<p><a href="http://dcbydesignblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/sunroom5.gif"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-855" title="sunroom5" src="http://dcbydesignblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/sunroom5.gif" alt="" width="432" height="576" /></a></p>
<p>Here&#8217;s Farrow &amp; Ball&#8217;s version of a breakfast room:</p>
<div id="attachment_856" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 586px"><a href="http://dcbydesignblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/Contemporary-Classic.gif"><img class="size-full wp-image-856" title="Contemporary-Classic" src="http://dcbydesignblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/Contemporary-Classic.gif" alt="" width="576" height="576" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">The Contemporary Classic contains Jo Malone&#39;s Lime Basil &amp; Mandarin candle. </p></div>
<p>My favorite setting is The Fresh Outdoors:</p>
<div id="attachment_857" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 586px"><a href="http://dcbydesignblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/The-Fresh-Outdoors.gif"><img class="size-full wp-image-857" title="The-Fresh-Outdoors" src="http://dcbydesignblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/The-Fresh-Outdoors.gif" alt="" width="576" height="432" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">This candle displays Farrow &amp; Ball&#39;s Cream color, along with Jo Malone&#39;s Grapefruit. </p></div>
<p>Here are the five versions, which will be available in May:</p>
<div id="attachment_858" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 586px"><a href="http://dcbydesignblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/white.gif"><img class="size-full wp-image-858" title="white" src="http://dcbydesignblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/white.gif" alt="" width="576" height="312" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">FB Cream, JM Grapefruit; FB Breakfast Room Green, JM Lime Basil &amp; Mandarin; FB Pelt, JM Wild Fig &amp; Cassis; FB Eating Room Red, JM Pomegranate Noir; FB Oval Room Blue, JM Blue Agava &amp; Cacao</p></div>
<p>You can get the candle/paint combinations at Neiman Marcus or local Farrow &amp; Ball stockists, such as <a href="http://www.colorwheel.net/" target="_blank">Color Wheel</a> in McLean.</p>

			</a>
		</div>
<p>Now that Jim completed the tables for our basement (see my previous post <a href="http://dcbydesignblog.com/2010/02/my-husbands-interpretation-of-josef-albers-nesting-tables/" target="_blank">here</a>), we&#8217;ve turned out attention to the dining room, whose striped wallpaper always made me feel like we were eating in a jail cell:</p>
<p><a href="http://dcbydesignblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/dining-before.jpg"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-658" title="dining-before" src="http://dcbydesignblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/dining-before.jpg" alt="" width="540" height="405" /></a></p>
<p>We had already updated the window treatments and seat cushions with a great Brunschwig &amp; Fils pattern &#8212; the cushions are the reverse of the curtains, and we installed the <a href="http://www.vivaterra.com/pls/enetrixp/!stmenu_template.main?complex_id_in=482007.2561145.2561499.3513810.page" target="_blank">Lotus Chandelier</a> from Viva Terra.</p>
<p>But the wallpaper had to go, and we had to choose paint that would complement the chandelier and the fabrics.</p>
<p>Jim stripped the wallpaper, but he let the kids go wild before it came down. I think the art adds a certain something, don&#8217;t you?</p>
<p><a href="http://dcbydesignblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/graffiti.png"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-659" title="graffiti" src="http://dcbydesignblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/graffiti.png" alt="" width="576" height="432" /></a></p>
<p>Meet the artists:</p>
<div id="attachment_660" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 370px"><a href="http://dcbydesignblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/artists.png"><img class="size-full wp-image-660" title="artists" src="http://dcbydesignblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/artists.png" alt="" width="360" height="515" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Henry, 8, is in the foreground, with Chal, 5, behind. </p></div>
<p>We were able to come up with a color scheme for beneath the chair rail, which complements the wood of the table, and sort of disappears at night: Java by Sherwin-Williams.</p>
<p>Benjamin Moore&#8217;s Amherst Gray is above the chair rail &#8212; a deep gray that gives the room a colonial feel. And we settled on Farrow &amp; Ball&#8217;s Elephant&#8217;s Breath for the rail and crown molding.</p>
<p><a href="http://dcbydesignblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/amherst.png"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-661" title="amherst" src="http://dcbydesignblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/amherst.png" alt="" width="360" height="483" /></a></p>
<p>So here&#8217;s the conundrum: We know we want to paint the ceiling, too, but <em>what</em>? You see the Amherst Gray on the ceiling in the photo above, but Jim wants something darker, a neutral that will disappear like the night sky and make the chandelier truly pop at night.</p>
<p>He likes Farrow &amp; Ball&#8217;s Tanner Brown, and I&#8217;ve cropped this picture below so you see just the paint sample and none of the white ceiling:</p>
<div id="attachment_662" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 370px"><a href="http://dcbydesignblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/tannerbrown.png"><img class="size-full wp-image-662" title="tannerbrown" src="http://dcbydesignblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/tannerbrown.png" alt="" width="360" height="516" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">This was taken during the day, of course. It looks much blacker at night.</p></div>
<p>I&#8217;m arguing to go with the Amherst Gray first, and if we hate it, or if all that gray seems too drab, then try the Tanner Brown, which, at $120 per gallon, is not a light decision.</p>
<p>Or maybe you don&#8217;t like either choice? Here&#8217;s what I&#8217;ve been staring at each morning, which kind of makes me shut down:</p>
<p><a href="http://dcbydesignblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/paintchips.png"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-663" title="paintchips" src="http://dcbydesignblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/paintchips.png" alt="" width="360" height="200" /></a></p>
<p>I&#8217;m really hoping there are some color experts out there who can advise. Thank you!</p>

<p>Walking through a designer showhouse before it&#8217;s been decorated really brings home the giant task designers have on their hands &#8212; and they only have a month or so to beautify it. The organizers of the <a href="http://www.dcdesignhouse.com" target="_blank">DC Design House</a>, which will benefit the <a href="http://childrensnational.org" target="_blank">National Children&#8217;s Medical Center</a> when it opens to tours April 9 through May 10, held a Bare Bones Tour on Saturday so the public could see the &#8220;before&#8221; rooms. That tour, no doubt, will make us all appreciate the &#8220;afters&#8221; that much more.</p>
<p>But pictures will tell a better story than my blathering, so let&#8217;s start.</p>
<div id="attachment_445" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 370px"><a href="http://dcbydesignblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/shaz.png"><img class="size-full wp-image-445" title="shaz" src="http://dcbydesignblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/shaz.png" alt="" width="360" height="535" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">We start with the huge entry hall, which Shazalynn Cavin-Winfrey will design. </p></div>
<div id="attachment_446" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 586px"><a href="http://dcbydesignblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/foyerboard.png"><img class="size-full wp-image-446" title="foyerboard" src="http://dcbydesignblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/foyerboard.png" alt="" width="576" height="432" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Shazalynn will apply this color and design scheme to the foyer. Niermann Weeks is loaning three huge chandeliers for the space, and David Iatesta is loaning a bench (in addition to lots of other pieces throughout the house). </p></div>
<div id="attachment_447" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 586px"><a href="http://dcbydesignblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/foyer.png"><img class="size-full wp-image-447" title="foyer" src="http://dcbydesignblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/foyer.png" alt="" width="576" height="432" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">The foyer has lots of ornate trim, and Shazalynn is papering the space between the trim with Farrow &amp; Ball paper. &quot;It&#39;s really going to make this feel a little edgier for a young family,&quot; she says. Farrow &amp; Ball is donating all paint and wallpapers for the DC Design House, as it has for the last two years. </p></div>
<div id="attachment_449" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 586px"><a href="http://dcbydesignblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/conservatory.png"><img class="size-full wp-image-449" title="conservatory" src="http://dcbydesignblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/conservatory.png" alt="" width="576" height="432" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">To the left of the foyer is the giant conservatory, which Barry Dixon will design.
