Guest Post: Powell Brower Interiors

I’m going to be a bit under water with work for the next couple weeks, so I’m pleased to have some talented guest posters show us their stuff in the meantime. Let’s start out with the Manassas, VA mother-daughter team of Nancy Powell and Bethany Brower of Powell Brower Interiors.

My daughter bought her first home, a 1000 square-foot cottage, four years ago. It became our design lab— and one of our first whole-house projects. We DIY’d and designed the entire house together, from making our own stencil for the hallway, to building headboards (she changed her master bedroom headboard three times). We had a ball, loved getting our hands dirty and experimented with lighting, dark colors, and eclectic decor.

Here’s the breakdown:

Living Room

The mirrors over the sofa are vintage finds from Luckett’s, as are the antiqued brass candle sconces. The sofa and chair are from Arhaus; the waterfall glass coffee table is from Wisteria, along with the brass campaign table/bar cart and mercury glass lamps. The walls are painted in White Mint by Sherwin Williams.

Master Bedroom

Bethany inherited the Waterford table lamps from her grandmother, which she paired with mirrored nightstands. The ceiling pendant is from Serena & Lily (now discontinued, sadly). We used John Robshaw fabric to make the headboard, while the pillow shams came from World Market. I used an old silk scarf from the 1970s to make a the bolster pillow in front.

We layered a Moroccan shag rug over wall-to-wall carpet. The ceiling is painted in Benjamin Moore’s Smoked Oyster. We both made the stencil for the hallway, which makes it look like the walls are papered.

Guest Room

The accent wall is Benjamin Moore’s Old Navy, and we fashioned the bed canopy from a large rectangular table cloth from Serena & Lily. Next, we painted a pair of JC Penney accent lamps in a brilliant orange, while the relaxed roman shade is custom made. The bolster pillow was made from Bethany’s grandmother’s vintage silk souvenir scarf from Nassau.

Home Office

We painted the Ikea bookcase turquoise and black, and added gold corner brackets added for accent. The white lacquered office desk is from World Market, dressed up with an Oly klismos chair that we found while shopping in Rehoboth Beach, DE. We painted the ceiling light fixture gold to give it more pizazz, and its lines echo the draperies from World Market.

This project solidified our future as a design team, and we are off and running! It bears noting as well that Bethany always designed with a pet-friendly attitude around her three dogs. One of our mottos is: Furry feet make the best accessory!
